St Saviour: Further Update on Meetings

As you know, the reverting of the buildings that housed the Social Club are now, as of the beginning of the new financial year, our parish responsibility. To make sure we were not taking on any unforeseen or serious structural or
maintenance issues, I commissioned a site survey, the results of which are still pending.

As you know, the reverting of the buildings that housed the Social Club are now, as of the beginning of the new financial year, our parish responsibility. To make sure we were not taking on any unforeseen or serious structural or maintenance issues, I commissioned a site survey, the results of which are still pending.

At the end of April, two significant developments in all the planning took place: first, a meeting with a potential tenant for the site of the Social Club, which would utilise the building and the rental income defray the overheads the parish has had to shoulder. Subject to due diligence, proper financials, and negotiation as to the rental price, this could be a way of securing the site longer-term and alleviate a significant financial burden on St Saviour and St Mary of the Angels Parish Accounts.

Second, the Church has been approved by the organisers of the local Social Supermarket, as a ‘branch’ of The Bread and Butter Thing. This scheme aims to offer heavily discounted food shopping to those most in need and our partners in the Council and local community - particularly our MP and our Mayor - were very
keen that I consider having St Saviour as a ‘hub’ for that part of our town.

The practicalities of this do not impact the use of St Saviour as a Church and will not affect the potential tenant for the former Social Club, either. Operating on a Monday, within certain hours, the Social Supermarket delivery arrives, the food is packaged and those collecting the food do so within a certain time
period. The whole operation is like a ‘pop-up’, in effect, coming, distributing, and then going. In next week’s Parish Newsletter, I will explain more about the Social Supermarket and how you might wish to volunteer as a member of the team.

The only remaining piece of the jigsaw is the site survey. Once I’ve received this, I will brief the Finance Committee of St Saviour and St Mary of the Angels and will the give a presentation at St Saviour about the financial situation of St Saviour and any issues of maintenance and buildings that may have been flagged up in the site survey.
