Restoration Painting

Father Edmund

18 February 2024

Parishioners may recall that the copy of Guido Reni’s The Annunciation found badly damaged and in need of repair, cleaning, and conservation, was sent away to be restored. Here are some photos that show how the painting was found in St Mary of the Angels Presbytery, with particular details on a large tear - and (right) the contrast when cleaning began!

The large tear (detail above) represented a huge amount of work to be done in restoring this precious painting to it’s original beauty and back into Church.

What a beautiful transformation! From years of grime and dirt built up through wear and tear and candles and incense soot, to see the painting once again as the Artist intended, and to have the tear carefully repaired is wonderful! Jan Smith has volunteered to restore the frame for the painting to be placed back into. Thank you, Jan! I thought now would be an opportunity to take some photographs and produce prints so parishioner s could have their own copy to have at home for your own prayers. Also , for the Annunciation (this year on 8 April) we might have a special Mass at St Mary of the Angels and I will bless the reinstalled painting on that feast day.
