Forty Hours’ Devotion: Begins this Friday!

Father Edmund

UPDATED 21 May 2023

Beginning on Friday 26 May 2023 at 12.15pm with the celebration of Mass and concluding with the celebration of Mass on Sunday 28 May 2023 at 11am, I would like to invite the whole parish to come together for an ancient and beautiful devotion as our preparation for Pentecost: Forty Hours of Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament . Forty hours of uninterrupted prayer before the Blessed Sacrament exposed on the Altar. During this time of prayer, the Blessed Sacrament will be accompanied by your presence in Church, and I would encourage parishioners to consider signing up for a half-hour or an hour period: lists of the times slots will be available for you to sign up to. I will be present throughout the Forty Hours’ Devotion, on hand to hear confessions in particular.

One very beautiful aspect of the Forty Hours' Devotion is the tradition of having the whole Sanctuary covered with candles and lights before the Blessed Sacrament, along with flowers, and incense. We will have candles available for you, for a small donation, to place before the Altar: you are welcome to write the
names of loved ones on the candle and place on the Sanctuary. These will burn as a constant sign of your prayer for your family and friends by name, before the Blessed Sacrament. You are welcome to come and go as you are able throughout the whole period of the Forty Hours.

Masses will be celebrated on Saturday 27 May at 6pm and Sunday 28 May at 9am as usual. The period of Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will be paused during those times, and the Blessed Sacrament exposed once again, following the Masses. Please see this Forty Hours as an opportunity to spend some
quality time with the Lord, to pray for your families and to pray for our whole parish, especially our new social projects, caring for those most in need, asking the Lord to send His Holy Spirit, as He did on the day of Pentecost.
